Taking Adipex and Prozac Together: Learn About This Combination

Adipex and Prozac togetherMany people have been investigating the combination of Adipex and Prozac for weight loss. It has become increasingly commonplace for researchers to test unexpected drug combinations. Many combinations have had surprising results for patients with obesity. Some of the most recently approved diet drugs are combinations such as phentermine crossed with an anticonvulsant.

This has made many wonder if a new combination of Adipex and Prozac might also be viable. Both of these pills are prescription drugs, though only one is currently prescribed for obesity treatment.

What is Adipex?

When you are thinking of combining two medications, it’s important to understand them each individually. Therefore, ahead of combining Adipex and Prozac, you will need to know what each one is and what they do.

Adipex is actually a brand name for a generic drug called phentermine. Phentermine is a popular obesity drug made of the active ingredient phentermine hydrochloride. It is a member of the sympathomimetic amines drug class. In this way, it is somewhat like amphetamines.

This drug works as a stimulant to your central nervous system (CNS), which includes both the brain and the nerves throughout the body. In this way, it raises the heart rate and blood pressure, creating a reaction that can suppress the appetite. As many people struggle to reduce their calorie intake while dieting, a smaller appetite can be helpful.

What is Prozac?

The other half of the Adipex and Prozac is not at all an obesity drug. Instead, Prozac is an antidepressant. It is also a brand name for the generic drug called fluoxetine. This drug is prescribed to people who are struggling with conditions such as depression or anxiety, among others.

This medication isn’t prescribed as often as it used to be as new generations of antidepressants have been created. These newer medications often work with more measurable results and fewer side effects.

Still, as a part of the onward trend to make phentermine more effective, many have asked if these drugs would combine well.

Could Adipex and Prozac Be Beneficial to Dieters?

As of the writing of this article, science has yet to determine if Adipex and Prozac can help with weight loss. The idea of “PhenPro” (phentermine and Prozac) has become increasingly popular over the years.

The thought is that the two drugs may be able to work together to produce even more effective results than Adipex weight loss pills alone. The reason is that phentermine speeds up the metabolism and raises energy levels. As it does this, it alters the chemicals and hormones within the brain that affect hunger pangs.

Another drug that has been determined to work with phentermine is called Topamax. It is an antiepileptic medication. It impacts the brain chemicals as well.

As that combination has been shown to work and has resulted in an FDA approved obesity drug, many are now curious about combining Adipex and Prozac. That said, the research is not there to support the combination. In fact, from what is known about the two drugs so far, it looks as though they may not be compatible at all.

The Problem with Adipex and Prozac

While Adipex may have effectively combined with one medication that affects the brain, it doesn’t mean it will in other cases. The issue with combining phentermine with Prozac has to do with the interactions between the two medications.

For instance, each one comes with its own long list of potential side effects. Some of these side effects are quite mild, but others can be quite severe. Moreover, in areas where the two medications can both cause the same side effects, this can place the user at a considerably higher risk of experiencing unwanted effects.

Some of the possible side effects that are caused by both Adipex and Prozac include: heartburn, diarrhea, low libido, gastrointestinal discomforts and others. That said, most of the side effects caused by both medications tend to be those of relatively low health concern. They are certainly uncomfortable, but aren’t threatening to the user’s health over the short term.

What do Doctors Say About Adipex and Prozac

Many doctors have been worried that combining these two drugs could lead to heart problems. That said, a number of studies on the medications have indicated that this may not be a serious concern. Moreover, using the drug combination does not appear to be linked with valvular heart disease.

Still, not all doctors are willing to make the leap toward bringing those drugs together. In fact, the company behind Prozac, Eli Lilly, has discouraged the use of PhenPro. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) have also discouraged the combination. The main concern is that there could be potential long term effects that have yet to be identified.

Still the Demand for PhenPro Continues

Despite the number of doctors and drug manufacturers that discourage it, many still want to try the combination. In fact, a doctor has already taken out a patent on the combination of Adipex and Prozac.

That doctor’s name is Dr. Michael Anchors, MD. He is a weight specialist with a Harvard PhD in biochemistry. He has the PhenPro patent and prescribes the drug combination to his patients.

Despite the ongoing debate regarding the safety and effectiveness of the combination, Dr. Anchors claims his patients want the medication now. He says his patients feel the drugs are relatively safe to be used together. He feels it is helping people.

That said, there isn’t any long term research to support Dr. Anchors’ prescriptions of Adipex and Prozac together.

Though Dr. Anchors is the most outspoken among those who are prescribing the combination, he is far from alone. It makes sense that he would be the one to encourage the use of these drugs the most as he holds the patents for their combination. Neither he nor many of the other doctors who are prescribing these drugs appear to have any intention of stopping in the near future.

A Word of Caution

While it may sound very appealing to try a new drug combination for obesity, it is very important to be careful. The first thing you should know is that it is not safe for you to try to combine these drugs on your own.

It is already a risk if taking Adipex and Prozac under a doctor’s supervision. It would be even more risky to try to do so without the help of a licensed healthcare provider. Therefore, if you are hoping to be able to combine the use of these medications, make sure that you do so with a doctor’s assistance.

Keep in mind that if your doctor does not recommend that you combine these drugs, there may be many reasons for the decision. Though it could be that he or she is among those who does not believe in combining these drugs, there are other possible reasons, too. Remember that these are each prescription medications and each one has its effects and side effects.

There can be many reasons that one or both of these drugs may not be appropriate for you. If you are prescribed Adipex and Prozac together, be sure to follow the weight loss strategy very closely. This will help to make sure that you keep your risk of side effects to a minimum. At the same time, it will help to improve your weight loss results overall.
