Lescol Reviews

Lescol reviewLescol is a prescription drug used to treat high cholesterol. The active ingredient is fluvastatin, which is also the generic name of this medication. Fluvastatin belongs to a group of drugs called HMG CoA reductase inhibitors (statins). It reduces levels of “bad” cholesterol (LDL – low-density lipoprotein) and triglycerides (types of fat) in the blood. At the same time, it works to increase levels of “good” cholesterol (HDL – high-density lipoprotein) and slows the buildup of fatty deposits in the blood vessels known as plaque.

By decreasing the amount of cholesterol made by the liver, Lescol can help reduce the risk of heart disease, strokes and heart attacks. Typically, this medication is meant to be used in conjunction with appropriate lifestyle changes that could help the medication work with greater effectiveness. These lifestyle changes may include stopping smoking, eating a proper diet (e.g. a diet low in fat and cholesterol), exercising, and losing weight (if overweight).

In addition to treating cholesterol, Lescol may also be prescribed to reduce the risk of heart complications in certain people who suffer from coronary artery disease.

Lescol is an oral medication and should be taken precisely as it has been prescribed by your doctor. The dosage you will be given is based on a variety of factors including your age, medical condition, how well you respond to the treatment and other medications that you may currently be taking. For this reason, it is important for you to tell your doctor about all medications you use. This includes both prescription and non-prescription drugs as well as any herbal products.

If you should feel that your dosage needs to be changed, inform your doctor immediately before altering your dose or stopping taking the medication.

Lescol is not without side effects. While some people can take it without experiencing any adverse effects, the most common side effect is upset stomach. If this should persist or worsen, let your doctor know right away.

Possible but far rarer side effects include mild memory problems or confusion, muscle problems (e.g. muscle pain/tenderness/weakness, especially if accompanied with fever or unusual tiredness), kidney problems (e.g. change in the amount of urine), liver problems (e.g. yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, severe abdominal pain, persistent nausea/vomiting). Also, although rare, it is possible for statins to cause or worsen diabetes. Should you experience these or any other side effects, contact your doctor immediately.

Finally, keep in mind that Lescol is not for everyone. Inform your doctor of any past or present medical conditions you may have. Also, let him or her know if you are pregnant, nursing or planning on becoming pregnant.
